What is lag B'omer? In short:
Lag Ba'Omer is a festive day on the Jewish calendar, celebrating the anniversary of the passing of the great sage and mystic Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai, author of the Zohar. On the day of his passing he taught a huge amount of the mystical/Kabbalistic parts of the Torah. Hence he requested that we mark the date of his passing with much joy. And because Kabbala is referred to as the "fire of the Torah", we celebrate with outings to the park and bonfires.
Also: During the weeks between Passover and Shavuot, a plague raged amongst the disciples of the great sage Rabbi Akiva. On Lag BaOmer the dying ceased.
